You’ve likely heard the terms “stem cell treatment” or “regenerative stem cell therapy,” but chances are you may still have some questions about what it is, how it works, and what it can be used for. Stem cell therapy is an alternative treatment for people who suffer from pain, especially in the shoulders, knees, hips, back, and feet. It can be used to provide relief for those who have pain as a result of previous injuries, arthritis, or age-related joint degeneration. It’s a safe and effective treatment — so why are some people still hesitant to try it?
It could be because there is still much misinformation out there about the use of stem cells. In today’s post from Dynamic Health Center, we’re going to explore some of the common misconceptions about regenerative stem cell therapy. Keep reading and if you’d like to learn more or request an appointment, please visit our website.
Misconception #1: Stem Cells Come From Human Embryos
This is perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions about stem cell therapy. The extraction of stem cells from embryos is illegal, and we have not, and never will, use embryonic stem cells for our treatments. The stem cells we use are called amniotic allografts and they are extracted from amniotic tissue which is donated from a consenting mother at the time of a healthy delivery.
Misconception #2: Stem Cell Therapy is Not Safe
Although regenerative stem cell therapy isn’t as “tried and true” as some other treatments and surgeries, it’s actually not as new as you may think. Stem cell therapy has actually been around for several decades and it’s helped millions of people all over the world.
One of the concerns about stem cell therapy is that your body could reject the cells. This is simply not true. Amniotic stem cells are naturally immune-privileged, meaning there is zero chance of your body having an adverse reaction.
Misconception #3: Stem Cell Therapy Requires Several Treatments
Although many medical treatments often require several follow up visits, one of the biggest benefits of receiving stem cell treatments is that it lasts a lifetime. Once you have the treatment you can expect a significant improvement and you won’t have to come back for another injection in a few months or years down the road. Each injection is good for one joint, so if you had an injection in your right knee, you wouldn’t have to have an additional injection unless it was needed in your left knee.
Misconception #4: Stem Cell Therapy Has Not Been Proven Effective
There have been many studies on the effectiveness of stem cell therapy, and research is ongoing. However, when it comes to really knowing whether or not a treatment is effective, you could say that the proof is in the pudding. Stem cell procedures performed by our clinic have proven to be over 97 percent successful at treating degenerative diseases and chronic pain. This is a far higher rate than any type of surgery. Plus, with stem cell therapy patients have a quick recovery time with many returning to their normal activities almost immediately following treatment.
Misconception #5: Stem Cell Therapy is Riskier Than Surgery
Whenever surgery is involved there’s always a risk of complication, most often related to bleeding, heat damage, adverse reaction to the anesthesia, or infection. That’s why it’s important to carefully consider your options before agreeing to surgery.
Stem cell therapy, on the other hand, is non-invasive. There’s no need to be admitted to a hospital, no use of anesthesia, and you won’t be cut open. Stem cell treatments are an outpatient procedure. The amniotic stem cells are carefully injected into the targeted area with the help of ultrasound, and that’s all there is to it. Treatments usually only take 30 to 60 minutes and are done in a single visit.
Misconception #6: Stem Cell Therapy is Only Good For a Few Things
By far the most popular reason for stem cell therapy is knee pain. It’s been shown to be effective in treating many common knee conditions including tears in the ACL, MCL, PCL, and LCL as well as arthritis, tendinitis, and cartilage damage. However, regenerative stem cell therapy is good for much more than just knees. It’s also effective for treating the following:
- Lower back pain due to degeneration of lumbar discs or bulging discs
- Hip pain resulting from degenerative diseases
- Tissue damage or arthritis in shoulders
- Neck pain due to whiplash or osteoarthritis
- Foot and ankle pain due to plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and peroneal tears
